What Are Grey-Market Peptides? BPC-157, CJC-1295, MOTS-C and TB-500 Explained

Grey-market peptides are becoming one of the most talked-about areas in recovery, performance, metabolism and healthy ageing. Names such as BPC-157, CJC-1295, MOTS-C and TB-500 now appear regularly in research papers, fitness conversations and online peptide communities.
But what does “grey market” actually mean?
In simple terms, grey-market peptides are compounds that have attracted scientific and public interest but have not been approved as routine medicines for the purposes commonly discussed online. They sit in the space between early-stage research and fully established pharmaceutical treatment.
The term can sound alarming, but it does not automatically mean that a peptide is fake or inherently dangerous. It means that research, regulation and public demand are moving at different speeds.
Why Are Research Peptides Becoming So Popular?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Many act like biological messengers, communicating with receptors and influencing processes already present within the body.
Each peptide sends a different message, which is why they are researched for different reasons.
BPC-157
BPC-157 research has largely focused on tissue protection, inflammation and repair. Most evidence still comes from laboratory and animal studies, but a small amount of human research has now emerged.
A pilot study involving 12 people with interstitial cystitis reported positive patient responses without identifying significant adverse effects. A separate 2025 pilot study administered intravenous BPC-157 to two healthy adults and reported that it was well tolerated at the doses studied (Lee et al., 2025; Stout et al., 2024). These studies are encouraging, although they remain far too small to establish long-term safety or effectiveness.
CJC-1295
CJC-1295 is researched for its interaction with the body’s natural growth-hormone signalling system.
In a controlled human study, CJC-1295 increased circulating growth hormone and IGF-1 in healthy adults. The researchers described the compound as generally well tolerated under the controlled conditions of the trial (Teichman et al., 2006).
This helps explain why CJC-1295 research is often discussed in relation to recovery, body composition and healthy ageing. However, changes in hormone levels do not automatically prove every benefit promoted online.
MOTS-C
MOTS-C is especially interesting because it is encoded within mitochondrial DNA.
Mitochondria are often described as the energy centres of our cells, but researchers now understand that they also send signals throughout the body. MOTS-C appears to be one of those signals.
Research has found that naturally occurring MOTS-C increases in human skeletal muscle and circulation following exercise. Animal studies have also explored its potential role in physical capacity, glucose metabolism and age-related decline (Reynolds et al., 2021).
Human therapeutic research remains limited, but MOTS-C represents an exciting new direction in mitochondrial and metabolic science.
TB-500
TB-500 is associated with research surrounding thymosin beta-4, a naturally occurring peptide involved in cell movement and tissue repair.
Human studies of pharmaceutical thymosin beta-4 have examined wound healing and tolerability. A Phase 1 study involving healthy volunteers investigated repeated doses, while clinical research has also explored topical thymosin beta-4 in chronic wounds (Han et al., 2021).
However, TB-500 products should not automatically be assumed to have the exact same evidence or safety profile as pharmaceutical-grade thymosin beta-4.
Why Quality Matters When Buying Research Peptides
For anyone researching where to buy peptides in the UK, the peptide name is only part of the picture.
Purity, accurate concentration, sterility, storage and transparent labelling all matter. A properly handled research product is very different from an unidentified or incorrectly labelled substance.
Grey-market peptides represent a developing area of science. Early findings around BPC-157, CJC-1295, MOTS-C and thymosin beta-4 provide genuine reasons for further research, but human trials remain limited and long-term effects are not fully understood.
The best approach is not fear or hype. It is informed curiosity, responsible sourcing and honest discussion about what the evidence does—and does not—currently show.
